The brighter side of $115 a barrel crude

Posted on April 16, 2008 in What is global warming

While George Bush attempts to distract the U.S. from doing anything substantive on climate change, an interesting thing is happening in Europe -- the price of carbon emission permits [EUAs] has hit a ten-month high. The reason: high oil and gas prices. The EU ETS is dominated by power utilities, which must hold EUA permits for every ton of carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted when burning fuel to generate power. Most fossil fuel generators burn either coal or gas. When the price of gas rises, it mak The Deniers? The World Renowned Scientist Who Got Al Gore Started "My own personal belief is that we should wait another 10 or 20 years to really be convinced that the greenhouse effect is going to be important for human beings, in both positive and negative ways." This is a joke, right? According an anonymous White House official, President Bush is urging a halt to CO2 emission growth by 2025. Notwithstanding the facts that a) halting emissions increase by 2025 won't do the job, and b) he's waited until he's got nine months left in office to propose anything on global warming, this is one of the funniest articles I've read all year. How Global Warming Could Cause An Ice Age?

Posted on April 16, 2008 in Causes of global warming

An Ice Age brought on by global warming was the scenario depicted in the movie THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW. While the science on which the movie based has been called into question, there may be some merit in the theory that global warming could cause an Ice Age. Why is Europe's climate comparitively milder than other places at the same latitude? Alaska and Greenland, both the same distance to the North Pole as Europe, are covered with ice and permafrost while most of Europe is not. The ocea Peak Oil news – Russian production declines with an irony alert Russian oil production declined, for the first quarter of this year, for the first time in a year. World’s Oldest Living Tree Discovered In Sweden

Posted on April 16, 2008 in Climate changes

The world’s oldest recorded tree is a 9,550 year old spruce in the Dalarna province of Sweden. The spruce tree has shown to be a tenacious survivor that has endured by growing between erect trees and smaller bushes in pace with the dramatic climate changes over time. For many years the spruce tree has been regarded as a relative newcomer in the Swedish mountain region. “Our results have shown the complete opposite, that the spruce is one of the oldest known trees in the mountain range,” says Global Warming:Experts’ Opinions vs Scientific Forecasts Sept. 18, 1924 MacMillan Reports Signs of New Ice Age March 27, 1933 America in Longest Warm Spell Since 1776 May 21, 1974 Scientists Ponder Why World’s Climate Is Changing: A Major Cooling Widely Considered to be Inevitable

The Power of Inference

There are a few men out there who have never had the misfortune of watching competitive ice skating. This first part is for them. There is a move all skaters do during a spin. They bring their arms in close to their bodies and lo! and behold, the rate of spin increases. There is an explanation in physics having to do with angular momentum and center of mass, and a formula here. Perhaps that formula doesn't completely explain it. It's true though. I don't skate much but I did a similar thing once Five Lost Cities Of The Future With the advent of climate change, droughts and rising sea levels, Environmental Graffiti takes a look at which American cities the archaelogists and anthropologists might be looking at in a few hundred years.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President George W. Bush's plan to stop the growth of global warming emissions is bound to be part of his checkered environmental legacy, a record roundly criticized by conservation groups and political opponents. Is That Where We Are? Last year, Friends of the Earth Canada (FOE) launched a lawsuit against the Minister of the Environment to hold him accountable for the fact that Canada won’t meet its Kyoto target. Not only the country won’t meet its Kyoto target, but the actual Government didn’t even try. The lawsuit rests on the fact that the Minister ignored the will of the Parliament by not complying with the requirements set by the Kyoto Protocol Implementation Act (KPIA). What with Global Warming now acknowledged to be something stronger than a myth, I was braced for 2008 to be the year that cheap flights ended. My heart agrees that we need to fly less for the sake of the planet but, selfishly, I can't help but cling on to the hope that travelling with Ryanair and Easyjet for pocket change will go on for a few years yet.
