Staying On Task with Global Warming

Posted on April 16, 2008 in Climate changes

The Fox News Channel is determined to play as still controversial an issue that much of industry, not to mention the public, not to mention Fox News owner Rupert Murdoch, has decided is not controversial. Al Gore has won fair and square, but since Fox has no use for Gore, that's easily discounted. If Fox really wants to play the opposition, though, the network has to be sure everyone stays on task. And unfortunately, that's becoming difficult, a sign that the opposition has become increasingl America's Most Endangered Rivers of 2008 Rivers flow over spillways, through blood colored gills, over rocks slathered with life. Their levels reflect changes in climate. They assimilate organic waste and carry eroded soil and plastic bits out to the floating garbage gyres. Rivers offer natural beauty, recreation, and are the lifeblood of many businesses. We wish we could write like Hemingway about them. (What would Hemingway have blogged - The Nick Adams posts perhaps?) American Rivers has just released a report on the top ten Americ

Global warming is not pushing the robin to extinction. Au contraire: It’s expanding the robin’s range northward, into places where it's never been seen. Robins are venturing so far north that they’ve even been sighted in the Inuit territory of northern Canada, where, Sen. John McCain tells us, there isn’t even a word for the birds. The report’s authors recommend that agricultural science place greater emphasis on safeguarding natural resources and on ‘agro-ecological’ practices, including the use of natural fertilizers, traditional seeds and intensified natural practices, and reducing the distance between

WHO drafts climate change action plan (The Herald)

Posted on April 09, 2008 in Climate changes

THE World Health Organisation is working on a global strategy and action plan to support member-states in developing their capacity for effective interventions to alleviate the impact of global climate change. Time to Take Global Warming Seriously I have to admit, I’ve been in the camp which hasn’t taken the threat of global warming seriously, but this story from FoodWeek Online has forced me to change my position… “Beer production in Australia and New Zealand could be cut by climate change within 25 years, a scientist has warned. Climate expert Dr Jim Salinger, of the NZ National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research says that climate change could cause a decline in malting barley production in both countries. ‘It will mean eit Imagining Australia - Global Engagement Following on from the Imagining Australia ideas on national identity, here are a few that relate to revamping our international engagement. We argue that freed from the constraints of the Cold War, enterprising middle powers-such as Australia-can take the lead in identifying global challenges and opportunities, developing solutions and strategies, and then generating the political will and resources necessary to enact them. Dear Ted...

Posted on April 09, 2008 in Climate changes

Someone needs to send Ted Turner a copy of Demographic Winter, so he'll stop making clueless statements like this: During a interview on PBS, the founder of CNN, Ted Turner, said the reason for climate change is because “We're too many people” and that the government needs to “stabilize the population” with measures such as China’s one child per family policy. According to Lifesitenews.com, Turner made his statements during an interview on the Charlie Rose Program on PBS on April 1. He said The Earth Will Start Cooling in 2008 Global cooling in ‘08. It may sound like a campaign slogan, but it could quite possibly be the truth. According to a leading scientist the earth will begin cooling in 2008. The head of the World Meteorological Organisation said La Nina - the weather phenomenon which is cooling the Pacific - is likely to trigger a small drop in average global temperatures compared with last year. The prediction - which follows a bitterly cold winter in China and the Arctic - is prompting some sceptics to qu Q&A: Greenpeace's Al-Hajj Talks Green Consoles [This Alistair Wallis-penned interview ran late last week on Gamasutra, and is notable because I think it's one of the first times someone has followed up with the organization and quizzed them in more details on their skewering of game hardware companies for not being sufficiently 'green'.] International activist organization Greenpeace recently released an updated version of its report ranking the three current games consoles in terms of their environmental impact.
